Think nutrition is complicated? Think again! 4 fabulous foods you really should know about

A friend asked me the other day about raw food nutrition for mothers and children – for example a woman is pregnant and she worries she won’t get enough nutrients if she eats raw food, or parents with small (or not so small) children worry about things like calcium, protein etc. What about those growing bones?

One thing I have learned is that there are certain fabulous foods that are just plain good for everyone. They’re so nutritious that they meet our needs for protein, calcium and many vitamins and minerals. Plus it’s easy to make them taste really delicious! And of course, I’ve got lots of ideas for you here.

These four fabulous foods are brilliant allies for boosting your nutrition, your energy and your lust for life!

Hemp seeds, hemp oil, hemp milk…everything hemp!

Hemp is fabulous.

Hemp is said to help with energy levels, so it’s important if you are tired, if you do sport, or if you just want to feel great!

Hemp is also said to be good for the heart (thank you omega fatty acids).

It also is good for making a light milk, if you don’t want to use nuts (see below).

How you use hemp

Lots of possibilities! You can:

  • sprinkle the shelled seeds over salads, or put a spoonful into a sauce or smoothie
  • make hemp milk for cereal or chocolate milk, by blending them with water (if you’re blending whole seeds, strain the result through some muslin first, as the shells can’t be eaten)
  • drizzle the oil over salads and other veggie dishes (it has a delicious nutty taste)
  • sneak some oil or seeds into a green smoothie (see Raw Foundations) and no-one will be the wiser, except you who are getting wiser and wiser, of course!

Chia seeds

Chia has loads of nutrition in even small amounts – which is why it’s a superfood, of course.

Chia is said to be a complete protein source, so it’s important for vegans and vegetarians.

It’s also very good for sustaining your energy over long periods of time, so if you are out and about for the day, make yourself some chia seed cereal! (see below)

Plus it tastes delicious!

How you use chia seeds

I love chia seeds! You can:

  • add a tablespoon to a soup or smoothie (it will thicken it up)
  • make a ‘tapioca-style’ cereal by soaking them in nut or seed milk and drizzling your favorite sweetener over the top
  • make a quick pudding by adding them to blended fruit (yum!)

Green leafy vegetables

Kale, in fabulous foods articleYes greens are important – but in more than just salads!

Greens contain a whole host of vitamins, minerals, and even protein (take that, meat industry!)

They’re great for keeping your energy up, your weight down, and your skin looking gorgeous.

In other words, they’re essential for good health!

You can:

  • put a handful into your blender for your fruit smoothie
  • chop them and stir them in with other veggies
  • use them as a green leafy salad base for dips, veggie mixtures and other toppings
  • drizzle some hemp, flax or olive oil over them with some lemon juice and a dash of tamari for some quick savory veggies

Flax seeds or flax oil

Flax_Seeds_And_Oil, in fabulous foods articleFlax is wonderful for everyone, as it’s an excellent source of omega 3.

Some studies have shown that flax can even help get out ‘bad estrogen,’ and so therefore could be helpful for preventing some diseases (see what the American Cancer Society says here).

Flax can also be beneficial for helping with blood pressure, keeping your weight down, and keeping your heart healthy.

In fact, in terms of fabulous foods, flax is considered to be one of the healthiest foods around!

Both the seeds and the oil are delicious (though you want to grind your seeds before using, see below).

How you use flax seeds and flax oil

You can:

  • add a tablespoon of the oil (or grind some of the seeds) and add to a soup, smoothie or salad
  • use the ground seeds as a base for a crumble topping
  • soak the seeds to make flax tortillas

There you have it – lots of ways to eat these fabulous foods!
